Parent Notice: Under 13
Effective July 24, 2026
This is a plain-language notice for parents and guardians of a student under 13 who has been asked to take an exam through Proctorly. It summarizes the fuller legal terms in the Proctorly Privacy Policy and Parent / Guardian Notice and Consent. Any applicable school agreement, including a FERPA / COPPA Student Data Addendum, is available from the school and controls if anything here conflicts with it.
Why you're seeing this
Your child's teacher or school has asked them to take an exam using Proctorly, a tool that helps teachers keep online exams fair. Because your child is under 13, U.S. law (COPPA) requires either your school's authorization or your direct consent before Proctorly can be used with them.
What Proctorly will do during the exam
- Ask to use your child's webcam and, on most devices, screen sharing.
- Take occasional photos of the webcam and screen.
- Take one ID or setup photo for the teacher to review.
- Notice things like: no face visible, more than one face visible, switching to another tab or app, or leaving fullscreen mode.
- Send a summary of anything unusual to the teacher, sometimes with the help of AI, so the teacher can look into it.
What Proctorly will not do
- It will not use facial recognition to identify your child or build a face profile.
- It will not guess your child's mood, attention, or honesty.
- It will not decide on its own that your child cheated, and it will not fail, grade, or discipline your child automatically.
- It will not sell your child's information or use it for advertising.
Who sees the information
Your child's teacher or school sees the information Proctorly collects during the exam: photos, timestamps, and any notices Proctorly generates. Any AI-written summary is a starting point for the teacher, not a final decision. The teacher and school are responsible for deciding what happens next, and they should give your child a chance to explain before taking any action.
Your rights as a parent or guardian
You can ask to:
- see what information was collected about your child;
- have that information deleted;
- say no to future use of Proctorly with your child;
- ask questions about how the information is stored and protected.
If your child's exam was assigned by a school, start with the school; they can also loop in Proctorly. If you're a homeschool parent, tutor, or independent educator using Proctorly directly, contact privacy@proctorly.co with any of the requests above.
